Pritchard on ignorance and normativity

چکیده
There is a debate on the nature of ignorance in contemporary epistemology. The standard view holds that lack knowledge, while new contends true belief. Rather than taking side this dispute, Pritchard recently offers proposal according to which essentially involves not just absence certain epistemic good, but also an intellectual failing inquiry. We argue Pritchard’s advances discussion by incorporating insight from virtue epistemology, and hence normative dimension properly noticed. Crucially, no longer mere static cognitive state, reflects quality inquiry inquirers’ obligations. However, faces two problems. First, current formulation incomplete so it cannot ground blame requires. More details must be filled in. Second, his would label all as normatively negative, therefore locutions such virtuous ignorance, blameless positive value wrong.

On Normativity
Judith Jarvis Thomson's Normativity (2008) is a formidable book in terms of both content and style (all otherwise unattributed page references in what follows are to this book). The structure is modular, as though to encourage the reader who wants to dip in and out. But as you read it becomes clear that dipping in and out would not be a good idea. Questions that occur to you are sometimes addre...
متن کاملPritchard, Stephens, and Donnelly on Population Structure.
In essentially any species, genetic similarity among individuals is structured by the existence of subgroups and geographic isolation. For researchers, understanding this population structure can be of direct interest, a necessary waystation to further analyses, or a confounding nuisance. Regardlessof themotivation, understandingpopulation structure is an essential step for population genetic an...
متن کاملOn Ignorance and Contradiction
A critical view of the alleged significance of Belnap four-valued logic for reasoning under inconsistent and incomplete information is provided. The difficulty lies in the confusion between truth-values and information states, when reasoning about Boolean propositions. So our critique is along the lines of previous debates on the relevance of many-valued logics and especially of the extension o...
متن کاملInfinitism, finitude and normativity
I evaluate two new objections to an infinitist account of epistemic justification, and conclude that they fail to raise any new problems for infinitism. The new objections are a refined version of the finite-mind objection, which says infinitism demands more than finite minds can muster, and the normativity objection, which says infinitism entails that we are epistemically blameless in holding ...
متن کاملNormativity, Necessity and Tense: A Recipe for Homebaked Normativity
A reductive analysis of a concept decomposes it into more basic constituent parts. Metaethicists today are in almost unanimous agreement that normative language and concepts cannot be reductively analyzed into entirely nonnormative language and concepts. Basic normative concepts are widely thought to be primitive or elemental in our thought, and therefore to admit of no further (reductive) expl...
